Last Full Day of Vacation

From the Brain of a First Responder

Last full day of vacation. I fly out tomorrow.

Honestly… I feel pretty damn good.

Somewhere in the middle of this trip I caught myself smiling for no reason. Not the fake “customer service” smile we all do on scene or in public. Just a random, real one. That kind that sneaks up on you when your brain finally unclenches a little.

That hasn’t happened in a while.

Today was simple in the best way. Had lunch with some more friends, walked around a cute little neighborhood, took my time instead of rushing everywhere like I usually do. No radio tones. No dispatch. No bullshit.

Just life.

And somewhere along the way I realized something — this vacation is exactly what I needed.

I rested.I caught up with people I care about.I slowed the hell down.

And in the middle of it all I built something I’ve been thinking about for a long time: this blog.

Yeah… I actually sat down and created a fucking blog.

I started writing about things most of us in this line of work don’t usually talk about. Childhood stuff. Life stuff. The shit that sticks with you. The kind of things that shape how you show up in this job and in life.

It’s weirdly freeing to put it out there.

Tomorrow the trip ends. In about 27 hours I’ll be back in the grind. Back to alarms, tones, radios, chaos, and the daily reality of being a first responder.

That part hasn’t changed.

But something in my head feels a little different right now.

A little lighter.A little less wound up.A little more decompressed.

This vacation wasn’t about escaping life.

It was about remembering how to actually live it.

And the truth is, the job is still there waiting for me. It always will be. But I’m walking back into it a little more grounded than when I left.

Still standing.Still moving forward.

And if you’re reading this, I invite you to keep stepping with me.

One day at a time.
