Welcome to From the Brain of a First Responder.

I’m a firefighter and Advanced EMT currently grinding my way through paramedic school. Before EMS and the fire service, I worked as a corrections officer—another job where chaos, violence, and human suffering are just part of the shift. Between those careers and a childhood packed with more trauma than any kid should have to deal with, life has never exactly been calm.

Recently, I was diagnosed with PTSD. This blog is where I work through that shit.

First responders spend our lives running toward other people’s worst days. We hold pressure on bleeding wounds, pull people out of wreckage, talk someone down from the edge, and then clear the call like it’s just another Tuesday. What nobody talks about enough is what all that does to your head over time.

The truth is, a lot of us are carrying around a metric shit ton of trauma—from the job, from life before the job, or both.

For years I did what most of us do: shove it down, laugh it off, crack dark jokes, and keep moving. But eventually that bill comes due. This blog is about paying it.

You’ll find thoughts, lessons, struggles, and small wins as I figure out how to deal with trauma while still working in a profession that dishes it out regularly. Some posts will be about mental health, fitness, resilience, and trying to unfuck your head. Some will be about the realities of the job. Some will just be honest reflections from someone trying to do better than yesterday.

This isn’t a polished self-help blog.

It’s raw.

It’s honest.

And sometimes it’s going to be uncomfortable.

If you’re a firefighter, EMT, medic, cop, corrections officer, ER nurse, veteran—or just someone carrying around a lot of shit you don’t talk about—you’re not alone.

This space is about surviving the job, surviving your past, and figuring out how to build a life that isn’t completely run by both.
